You can't go wrong with the old school ways!

After releasing some promising EPs and demos, Helleruin finally released their awaited debut earlier this year. The final result was pretty much as anyone can expect after listening to the EPs and demos. The same kind of Primitive Black Metal, with some extremely catchy old school riffs (you can almost call it Black 'n' Roll!). The riffs are very memorable and nicely done, and create a very engaging character for this album.

The overall riffs and guitar sound mostly remind me of old school Norway Gorgoroth, with riffs that are scorching, fast and cold.

The production is very crisp and doesn't feel chaotic or raw... It's just doing everything the old school way! The drumming is a bit high in the mix (at some points, the drumming sounds like old school Russian Black Metal bands!) but other than this minor detail, there is nothing to report in the production and mixing department. Even though you can hear everything (including the bass), they managed to keep the raw feeling (which is quite rare in my opinion).

As I said, the riffs are very catchy and old school, he manages this catchy-ness through a semi-unique style; mixing the scorching tremolo parts with more melodic leads and passages (and even some acoustic intervals!). The reason I used the term "Semi-Unique" is simply because we had some people who did this sort of thing before, especifically some Finnish guys like Finland Satanic Warmaster.

Some of the songs (like "Passage" and "War upon Man") have a bit of Polish feeling (most notably Poland Mgła). The first two songs have some Norwegian and Swedish kind of dynamic, but melancholic feeling! The remaining songs ("Naar de Aarde terug" and "No Light Shines Through") are a bit more melodic compared to the others.

Overall, this album is a great proof that one man bands can create great, dynamic music too! I highly recommend you to also check the "Afrodisiacum der vroomheid" EP, which is from this guy's side project, alongside this exceptional release.
