2 Reviews for 'Minenwerfer - Alpenpässe''Alpenpässe'

¨Through meadows and hilltops, the alps are your death...¨
Yes. My favorite Black Metal album.
Where do I start? This album takes me to fascinating places musically speaking. From the first seconds you know that you are about to experience something totally out of the ordinary and it's an experience that I continue to have since the first time I listened to it.
¨Der Blutharsch¨ is simply masterful. The almost 20 minute long epic keeps hitting you in a very stylish way. Varying between melodic passages to some just brutal and heartbreaking, this song sits on the same table as songs like ¨Black Rose Immortal¨. Goosebumps all the time.
¨Dragging the Dead Trough Mountain Passes¨ reminds us more of the Minenwerfer from the first two albums but that's not a bad thing by any means. A song in the purest style of that Black Metal that doesn't stop suffocating you through the whole runtime of the song.
We get to the middle of the record with ¨Cloaked In Silence¨. A song where I think it's a perfect mix between that melodic Minenwerfer and the one that is totally head crushing. As I previously said, goosebumps all the time.
¨Kaiserjägerlied¨ offers us a merely melodic and beautiful Black Metal, with one of the most magical acoustic interludes that I've ever heard in my life and which climax is a scream that gives us the creeps but at the same time (and sorry for sounding repetitive ), yeah, GOOSEBUMPS.
The album reaches its ripe point and we are close to the end with “Tiroler Edelweiss”, a one hundred percent acoustic ballad that might sound out of place on paper, but makes perfect sense within the narrative and style of the album. It's the melodic break that the listener needs and which beauty always takes me to the alps that are the protagonists of this album's artwork cover. My favorite acoustic song of all time.
The album closes with Withered Tombs, which despite the fact that in my opinion it is the weakest on the tracklist, it doesn't stop working as a perfect closure for the epic journey of sound sensations that we have just been part of. Brutally melodic, which is the adjective that encompasses the entire album.
What else can I say? An album that any fan of Black Metal and especially of the atmospheric and melodic branch should listen to. An album that already has a certain cult status and that put Minenwerfer on the map quite deservedly. I can't wait for the next album from this talented duo. Thank you for reading.

Extremely great start, but quickly boring after that.
The first time I listened to this album, I thought it would be a total masterpiece because of the first song. "Der Blutharsch" is an absolute banger, which deserve way more attention. It was my favourite song of 2019 actually. But that I quickly lost that feeling when the opening song ended, and I will explain you why later in the review.
Firstly, let's talk about the opening song that like I said, is a masterpiece to me. I love the little German speech at the beginning of it, and I love the very melodic lead guitar riffs that are present pretty much during the hole song. Also, and this is definitely the greatest aspect of this band, the vocals. Fuck sake they are good on that song especially. I would honestly put Bret Tardiff in my top 10 best black metal vocalist of all time. The Bass line is also incredibly good on this song. Plus, the song is progressive and never become boring through the listen, which is great because sometimes song that are as long as this one can become unentertaining and repetitive. But it is far from being the case with this one.
After this song, the band kinda lost it. The first song was extremely great, but I feel like a lot the others song are fillers, like the second and third song. These song are not entertaining at all to me. The rhythm guitar is literally boring on both songs, and the lead is mid. Only the vocals stay as great as at the beginning of the album.
The fourth song, "Kaiserjägerlied", is a way better than the two previous ones. There is a little clean part in this song in which I like the acoustic guitar, especially the little solo. But I really hate that they putted scream in it. It feels very cringe to me. On the other hand, at the end of this clean part, distort guitar come back with clean singing, and I agree that this part is freaking awesome. I love that part very much.
But they come back again with pretty much the same concept as in the fourth song at the beginning of "Tiroler Edelweiss". That is where I started to find the album repetitive and even boring. Again, a clean part with the same type of solo and the same type of riff.
The last song is a bit better, but far to be enough to save the album. Good riffs at the start, but same type of lead again so It feels repetitive. It is probably the second best song on the album, but still not very good.
To conclude, I believe that this album is definitely overrated because of the opening song and I believe that maybe people are biased on their opinion of this album because of that song. I believe there was a hype because of the opening track, but honestly it is a boring album to me after that. Even if they gave us a masterpiece at the beginning it doesn't mean the album is great at all. One great song doesn't make the hole album great. If the first song wasn't there, I would probably put a note around 50% for this album.
So, instead, I really recommend you the album called "Volkslieder" by the same band. Total banger to me. Way better and way more entertaining.
